Q3 State of the Industry report shows more than half of the Q1-to-Q3 rise in marketed prices came from 2027 model-year sticker-price increases, with more changeovers ahead
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Catalyst IQ today released its Q3 2026 State of the Industry report, which shows rising new vehicle prices are testing how far U.S. consumers can stretch to keep buying, with financial pressures emerging that could weaken future demand.
New vehicle movement increased 3.1% year over year in Q3 2026, even with average new vehicle prices reaching a record $52,770 on September 30. But cracks in the market foundation may be pointing to a tougher selling environment going forward.
“Strong sales today can hide a weaker market tomorrow,” said Rick Wainschel, Vice President of Analytics at Catalyst IQ. “The auto industry is keeping sales moving, easing credit restrictions and extending loan terms. Consumers are helping by gravitating to more affordable and fuel-efficient choices. But those shifts will have an impact on OEM and retailer profitability and longer-term prospects. With price increases related to ongoing model year changeovers adding to an already challenging environment, dealers and automakers must navigate these market dynamics carefully to keep sales on track."
2027 Model-Year Transition Continues as Prices Rise
At the end of the quarter, the average marketed price for new vehicles hit an all-time high of $52,770. Sticker-price differences between outgoing models and incoming 2027 vehicles accounted for $1,067 of the $2,118 increase in average marketed new vehicle prices from Q1 to Q3. Higher-priced vehicles left in the inventory mix made up a larger share of available dealer supply, contributing another $952 to the increase. Changes in discounts and incentives accounted for the remaining $99.
Cracks in the Financial Foundation Begin to Emerge
At the same time that prices hit its record, consumer confidence approached all-time lows; subprime lending portfolios jumped by 10.7%, and loan defaults rose to recent highs. “We aren't seeing the sky by any means,” said Wainschel. “But there are enough warning signs to warrant caution and care in charting a forward course. A market that sustains volume by extending terms and widening credit is borrowing demand from future quarters and deepening negative equity in the trade cycle that follows. Near-term numbers can look healthy while the longer-term foundation weakens."
Truck Inventory Is Building While Smaller Vehicle Supply Falls
Consumers are also contributing to financial shifts through their purchase actions. Average new vehicle inventory declined from Q2 to Q3, yet full-size trucks recorded net inventory gains of 29,027 vehicles as sales could not keep pace with supply inflows. Heavy-duty trucks also saw inventories accumulate, adding 12,288 units while XL SUVs added 9,837. Meanwhile, small and midsize sedans, wagons and hatchbacks saw inventories decline as sales outpaced inventory inflows.
What Catalyst IQ recommends dealers do over the next 30 days:
- Make value easy to find: Feature sedans, wagons, smaller SUVs, hybrids and lower-priced trims where local demand supports them. Present these vehicles as practical choices that fit buyers' needs and budgets.
- Make model-year savings clear: Compare current prices and available incentives on remaining 2026 vehicles with incoming 2027 models. Advertise specific vehicles that offer buyers a meaningful affordability advantage.
- Focus advertising and incentives on slower-selling vehicles: Use local demand, inventory age and competitive pricing to direct advertising and incentives toward slower-moving inventory while protecting margins on vehicles already selling well.
- Help buyers understand the full cost: Discuss monthly payments, loan terms, trade-in equity and ownership costs early. Help buyers choose a vehicle and financing terms that best fit their budgets.
Catalyst IQ’s recommendations for automakers to support dealers navigating the model-year transition:
- Build on hybrid momentum: With hybrid movement up 33% year over year, prioritize hybrid allocation in the fastest-turning segments and use dealer demand signals to inform capacity planning.
- Align EV planning with current demand: With EV movement down 40% year over year, use local demand insights to guide planning and allocation. Focus marketing support on markets and buyers best suited to current EV models.
- Equip dealers to sell efficiently: Provide model-specific comparisons of fuel savings and total ownership costs to help demonstrate value beyond the sticker price and turn shopper interest into purchases.
- Hedge fuel volatility in product plans: Ensure the powertrain strategy holds up if gas prices fall as quickly as they rose, accounting for how lower fuel costs could shift buyers’ vehicle preferences.
