Modus Adds Two Former Grant Thornton Audit Executives to Build an AI-Native Firm

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Modus, the company powering the first AI-native audit, today announced that Matt Van Buren has joined full time as Director of Audit Transformation and Jim Burton has joined as an advisor. Both come from Grant Thornton, where Burton served as Chief Auditor during a 35-year career, and Van Buren led audit transformation under him.

Most audits still run on decades-old processes: months of back-and-forth, manual data collection, and sampling that touches only a fraction of the underlying records. The average audit takes four months, and the professionals doing the work have been underserved by technology for a generation.

Modus has rebuilt the audit for the AI age. Its agents reason across the entire general ledger rather than a sample of it, surfacing risks a manual review would miss and freeing auditors to focus on judgment. The approach conforms to auditing standards generally accepted in the United States and is adaptable to international standards, bringing the rigor of the largest firms within reach of firms of any size.

For the companies being audited, the difference shows up as a materially better experience: fewer document requests, less disruption to the finance team during fieldwork, and higher coverage of the underlying records. It also means results arrive while they are still useful, whether the company is raising capital, satisfying a lender, or moving on a transaction.

"We started Modus to deliver the highest quality audit in a fraction of the time," said Arush Jain, CEO and Co-Founder of Modus. "It's been an honor to partner with Jim and Matt to bring that standard to the mid-market and truly reimagine what an audit means."

"The team at Modus brings relentless curiosity and a genuine drive to help auditors do their best work, combining smarter processes, thoughtful technology, and a people-centered approach," said Matt Van Buren, Director of Audit Transformation at Modus. "I gravitated instantly to their agile approach to innovating the audit and the incredibly high-caliber team they've assembled."

"After 35 years working in audit, I'm excited to bring the forefront of AI to the practice," said Jim Burton, advisor to Modus and former chair of the AICPA's Assurance Services Executive Committee. "Working with our CPA firm and engineers, it's been remarkable to see how quickly audits are changing and what the future holds."

Public accounting is a $250 billion market employing more than a million professionals in the United States, and audit has been left largely untouched by the AI advances now reshaping every other corner of knowledge work. The workflows Modus is building stand to save tens of thousands of hours across the engagements they support, and early engagements have shown a 70% reduction in audit hours with a guaranteed four-week completion timeline.

Modus is actively hiring across audit and engineering. CPAs interested in building the future of the profession can reach the company at arush.jain@modusaudit.com/ @ModusAudit.
